Setting up AI agents in n8n presents significant challenges, particularly when it comes to testing them effectively. I’ve been struggling with making MCP (Master Control Program) work in this context.
Key observations about AI agents:
1. AI agents are bright but not truly ‘intelligent’ – they require extensive guidance and structure
2. The language used in instructions is absolutely critical
3. The system prompt in the AI Agent node is particularly crucial for success
4. Getting the language right requires careful consideration and planning
5. Consistency in vocabulary is essential – you must decide whether you’re talking about records, ideas, content, pages, posts, or databases and stick with that terminology
6. Without a consistent vocabulary across tools, the AI will struggle to understand and execute the desired actions
7. Testing is particularly challenging because AI responses can vary based on subtle differences in prompts
The dream is to have a well-functioning MCP system where the AI can effectively understand and process information across different tools and contexts, but achieving this requires meticulous attention to language and instructions.
